Formed at the University of Michigan in 2009, StarKid represents a coalition of writers, directors, actors and designers dedicated to creating accessible, quality theater for the modern era. StarKid is pioneering the use of the internet as a new and innovative way to produce theater, making it accessible to millions of people around the world. The art of live performance blended with the accessibility and quality of HD filming has created a new world of distribution and opportunity for theatre.
In just over two years, StarKid reached over 90 million views on YouTube and captured the attention of national media such as Entertainment Weekly, “Access Hollywood,” “Entertainment Tonight,” The Hollywood Reporter, The Detroit Free Press, New York Magazine and National Public Radio. StarKid Productions remains committed to pioneering the internet as a new outlet for theater distribution.
StarKid first invaded the internet in July 2009 with A Very Potter Musical—a fan-made parody that premiered on YouTube and immediately went viral. Filmed during a live performance through the University of Michigan, the production was an instant hit with fans of the Harry Potter series (as well as the staff of Entertainment Weekly) and quickly garnered nearly 2 million views. In March 2010, StarKid's second production, the original musical Me and My Dick, blasted its way onto the Billboard charts, landing at #11 for “Original Cast Recording”—a first for a college production. The show not only solidified StarKid as a real player in comedy musicals, but also grabbed national attention from the likes of MTV and blogger Perez Hilton. In May 2010, StarKid returned to Hogwarts with A Very Potter Sequel, receiving over 4,000 ticket requests for 400 available seats. This production—which was named to Entertainment Weekly’s “Must List”—premiered to packed houses with fans from across the world lining up hours before each show.
StarKid’s Chicago premiere production, Starship debuted to seven sold-out screenings in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago before hitting the internet in April of 2011. In the first weekend of release, the Starship cast album climbed to #4 on the iTunes charts, and went on to reach #1 on the Billboard Charts for Cast Albums.
StarKid embarked on it’s first national tour, The SPACE Tour, in November of 2011 playing 21 shows in 17 cities across the country. StarKid’s second Chicago production in March of 2012, Holy Musical B@man, played to full-houses and debuted on YouTube with over 1.3 Million views to date. StarKid ventured on to a second national tour, APOCALYPTOUR, in May of 2012 which culminated in a sold-out show at the historic Roseland Ballroom in NYC.
To date, the StarKid YouTube channel has garnered over 180 Million views, 395,000 subscribers, 200,000 Facebook fans, and over 134,000 Twitter followers worldwide. How about that!
